Darren provides technical leadership and advice on WASH issues, manages institutional grants, and is a key player in WASH advocacy and outreach around the globe. With nearly 20 years of experience, Dr. Saywell specializes in water supply, sanitation and
wastewater management within a framework of integrated program management. He has worked extensively in Africa and Asia and has deep expertise on infrastructure and service delivery for low-income communities. He is particularly interested in the integrated
nature of sustainable service delivery, through project planning, design, implementation and management.
Prior to joining Plan International, Dr. Saywell worked with the International Water Association in the Netherlands; the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council in Switzerland; and the Water, Engineering and Development Centre in the UK. A sanitation
specialist by training, he has a strong track record in the provision of urban water and sanitation services. He holds a Ph.D. from Loughborough University in the UK in Sanitary Engineering. Dr. Saywell serves on the steering committee of the Sanitation and
Water for All initiative as Vice-Chair to the Partnership; is a member of the Joint Monitoring Program’s post-2015 working group on sanitation and is a board member of Africa-AHEAD and Building Partnerships for Development

The challenge that many INGOs have (Plan International included) is a tendency to be very narrowly focused on the implementation of practices and an adversity to change in programming approaches. If we want to be able to deal with these challenges, INGOs
need to sharpen our approaches, and do so quickly.
