"The Give Effect" in Action at Foundation's Visitor Center

January 24, 2013

Living out our intentions to give back is never easy, but what if you could join in with others to make it happen?

In December, through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Visitor Center’s The Give Effect campaign, we did just that.

We kicked off the project in December, with a “The Giving Tree” that housed over 200 wishes from local grantees. Families and individuals chose a wish to grant and dropped off gifts that benefited YouthCareWellspring Family ServicesTechnology Access Foundation (TAF)Educare, and Rainier Scholars.

The campaign cumulated on December 29 with Family Day: The Give Effect when 1,412 community members came to the Visitor Center to communicate their support for organizations or causes of their choice. The activity tables were packed and buzzing with excitement, full of families creating cause bracelets, buttons, and plushy toy dolls for those in need.

The Give Effect became contagious and it was amazing to watch the Visitor Center come to life with the magic of these creative collaborations. Here is what a few people said:

  • After a week of celebrations, this event helped us not only to be grateful but to be aware of our fortune, our responsibility, our ability, and the work of others!
  • Great to see all the foundation is doing. Prompts good family conversations.
  • Wonderful information/inspiration; interactive, fun and a family-to-family atmosphere.

To document the event, Igers Seattle (the Instagram Community of Seattle) sent 10 photographers who took inspiring and beautiful photos. To see a few, check out their blog post at We Are Juxt.

At the Visitor Center, we are asked daily “How can we make a difference?” We’re excited to help tackle this question. The Family Day: Give Effect is the first of many family days the Visitor Center will host, where the community can come together to share their ideas and inspiration for making a difference in the world.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be inspired by what others are doing to make the world a better place. In addition to special events, the Visitor Center has a wide variety of hands-on interactive exhibits that offer ways to share your thoughts and ideas about solving large and small problems in the world.

Visits are free! Drop in or schedule a tour Tuesdays – Saturdays 10:00 AM- 5 PM. Visit www.visitorcenter.gatesfoundation.org to learn more or follow us on Facebook or Twitter.
