This #GivingTuesday, give the gift of good health and education

November 28, 2016

While Thanksgiving may be over, there is still much we have to be grateful for. We’re grateful for our families, our colleagues and for the meaningful work we get to be a part of everyday.

We’re also grateful for all that you do. Over the last few years, we’ve watched a growing number of people and organizations around the world join the #GivingTuesday movement – a day of donating and volunteering to kick off the holiday season.

Over the last few years, we’ve watched a growing number of people and organizations around the world join the #GivingTuesday movement – a day of donating and volunteering to kick off the holiday season.

This year, we hope you will join us in celebrating the day by contributing to a cause that you feel passionately about. For us, that means saving children’s lives and ensuring they have access to quality education. Over the last two decades, we’ve seen some incredible progress – and we know that, together, we can do even more.

So we wanted to share a few organizations that inspire us and our work. If you feel inspired by them too, anything you give, no matter how big or small, will help make an impact on the lives of children around the world

1. Malala Fund (Participating in Giving Tuesday): What if every girl, everywhere had the right to a minimum of 12 years of quality education? It could change the world – and it is exactly what the Malala Fund fights for. After an attack by the Taliban nearly killed her, Malala became a passionate advocate for the right of girls everywhere to have an education. While a girl’s education status is the best prediction of her and her family’s health and well-being, more than 130 million girls are still out of school today. Your support for this organization can help to empower girls and transform their lives.

2. Tobacco Free Kids: Like many others, we have watched loved ones suffer from the serious health effects of smoking, a habit often picked up as a pre-teen or young adult. Second-hand smoke can be just as dangerous; it puts children at increased risk for pneumonia, a leading childhood killer. Despite this, too many young people continue to be at risk for tobacco addiction. This is why Tobacco Free Kids is such an extraordinary organization: They fight to reduce tobacco use and its death toll around the world by advocating for public policies proven to prevent kids from smoking and protect everyone from secondhand smoke. Each year, the organization runs ‘Kick Butts Day’ – a national day of activism that empowers youth to speak out against Big Tobacco – but your support can begin today.

3. The Citizens Foundation: We have met so many wonderful children in Pakistan who are ready to learn and leave their marks on the world. But without schooling, many of them won’t be given the chance to do that. The Citizens Foundation aims to bring quality schooling to underprivileged children in urban slums and rural areas of Pakistan – some of the hardest to reach. Founded in 1995, the organization has expanded to over 1000 schools with 165,000 students in cities across the country. This has created nearly 15,000 new jobs, around 70% of which are female faculty positions. Any donation, no matter the amount, can be earmarked for a specific project – give $144, and you’ll support a full year of education for one child.

However you decide to give thanks, know that your donations will go even further on #GivingTuesday: The Gates Foundation, along with Facebook, will match up to $1 million in donations made to organizations on this list.

We hope you will choose to participate in #GivingTuesday, in whichever way you can. Every action now will contribute to a lifetime of benefits – and keep children healthy and thriving around the world.
