TEDxChange @ TEDxDelhi: Making a Difference One Life at a Time

April 18, 2011

“What can I do?” This is the question I get asked all the time. Join me at TEDxChange @ TEDxDelhi, where I discuss what I’ve learned about how we can each make a difference in the lives of people living in poverty and with disease. It starts with finding an innovative solution to the problem of just one person and scaling up what works.

Seven billion people live on the planet. And we want every one of them to have the chance to live a healthy and productive life. When you think about world poverty and global diseases and the billions affected, it’s hard to imagine how we can solve problems as vast and far-reaching as these. How do we find solutions and make sure they spread around the world?

We’ve learned some fascinating things over the last decade, working with and in India—a hotbed of innovation when it comes to solving some of the most difficult health problems of our time. It’s also, sadly, where half of all malnourished children in the world are born. In order to gain greater insight into solving some of these problems, we looked to one area of India, in particular, which has already made tremendous strides. The government of India is taking proven, innovative solutions to huge global health problems in the northern state of Bihar and scaling them up to the rest of the country—and, in fact, around the world.
