Rasa Izadnegahdar is a Senior Program Officer on the Pneumonia team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He focuses on coordinating and managing grants within the Treatment Innovation and Delivery initiative which range from research to inform and optimize treatment guidelines, to advocating for appropriate national and subnational policies for care of children with pneumonia in high burden countries and accelerating availability and appropriate use of key treatment commodities including amoxicillin DT, pulse-oximetry and oxygen. 

He is a board-certified pediatrician by training and continues to provide clinical care in Seattle, WA. He completed his post-graduate medical education at Boston Children's Hospital and Boston University and holds a MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Ideas Wanted: New Ways to Reduce Childhood Pneumonia Deaths

If we hope to see fewer children dying of pneumonia in the next 15 years, the same way we have in the previous 15, we will need to pay more attention to this overlap and the role of undernutrition in pneumonia.

What is Pneumonia?

Many solutions already exist to tackle pneumonia – solutions like vaccines, exclusive breastfeeding and good nutrition, handwashing, access to safe sanitation, safe drinking water, clean cookstoves, oral rehydration solution, and vitamin A can substantially reduce child deaths.But, continued innovation to improve diagnostic tools for pneumonia is crucial. The world must continue to prioritize the development of diagnostic and treatment innovations in order to reduce child pneumonia deaths.
