New Leaders Named for WHO Global Malaria Program and UNITAID

July 30, 2014

Terrific news today. The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the appointment of two new leaders in the fight against HIV, TB and malaria. Congratulations to Pedro Alonso, from Spain, the new Director of the WHO Global Malaria Program; and Lelio Marmora, from Argentina, the new Executive Director of UNITAID. They will assume leadership later this fall.

Many of us here at the Gates Foundation have had the privilege of working closely with Pedro and Lelio over many years. Both are smart and inspired global health visionaries who have proven themselves as exemplary leaders. The WHO Global Malaria Program and UNITAID are lucky to have them at the helm.

We’re looking forward to our continued partnership as we develop new tools and strategies to turn the tide on HIV and TB and accelerate the eradication of malaria.
